AdventureonthePCT.com was created and is maintained by Gen Shimizu, aka Magnet. I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2004 and hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Belden in 2006. I got off the trail due due to a month long bout of vascular cluster headaches. On the PCT, one of the many things I discussed with my companions was the lack of an online forum for the PCT, at least one receiving a good amount of use. Whiteblaze.net had been a huge help for myself and others when preparing for the AT and I wondered why there wasn't a similar place available for PCT hikers.
The project began in January 2007. On a whim I began playing around with the idea of trying to create a Whiteblaze type site for PCT'ers. After a good amount of work and learning, most of the quirks were worked out and the site was looking as I wanted it. I created a topic structure to help organize the site and told a couple of friends. In the last six months the site has grown to have 130 members and over 830 posts in 250 threads. By creating AdventureOnThePCT, I hope to provide a well organized online resource of information pertinent to enthusiasts of the Pacific Crest Trail.
Upon returning home from my 2006 adventures on the PCT, I began a small business making and selling some backpacking gear. I wanted to follow through with some ideas I had while hiking. Originally I planned to advertise on AdventureOnThePCT.com but have decided not to pursue this option (I do post links in my signature which is shown with my posts). I may decide in the future to provide advertising space on the site. I would prefer to avoid this as I know some people would object. Before making any decisions of this nature, I will open up the topics for discussion in the forums and consider the thoughts of the members.
The costs I incur hosting this site are listed below.
